He believes, space technology could have already taken us to Mars and beyond if more and more people had worked towards it, collectively, and not just government agencies. While   building SpaceX, he proved a lot of people wrong, once who firmly believed that Space-tech is not for private ventures to explore.  

In India, ISRO is no doubt doing an excellent job. India is also among the very few countries that have planned to have its own space station by 2030. As per a report by Research and Markets – The Space Industry, was valued at US$ 360 billion in 2018, and this is projected to grow to value US$ 558 billion by 2026. Therefore, these are all good reasons to launch a startup in this domain and revolutionise space technology.

Kawa Space Tech

The company designs and operates earth observation satellite constellations. It serves customers in financial services, government, strategic risk management and agriculture. Kawa Space is based out of Mumbai, Maharashtra, and was founded in 2019 by Kris Nair and Bala M.

The 16 member team has won the contract to build over 27 satellites for ISRO. 

It is backed by Paytm founder, Vijay Shekhar Sharma.

Nair says, “Space is a very large opportunity. We have 300+ companies in India focusing on this market, they have been operating their businesses and doing remarkable things for the last 30+ years. Dhruva Space Tech

Dhruva Space which is based out of Hyderabad, Telangana, was founded in 2012 by Sanjay Srikanth Nekkanti and Narayan Prasad. The company is working on to build and launch small satellites in the 10-100 kg range. Do you ask, why? Two reasons: It cost less and have a turnaround time of nearly 18 months. 

Highlights:

Dhruva Space seems positive in its endeavour of building and making private commercial satellite, a norm in India. The company is anticipating to build about 70 small satellites that can be launched as a constellation, for its potential customers.

Abhishek Raju, chief strategy officer of the company, says “We are trying to prove our hypothesis that space need not be expensive, and a lot of frugal innovation is possible.”

Exseed Space 

Exseed Space was founded by Kris Nair and Asshar Farhan in 2017 and his headquartered at Mumbai, Maharashtra. They develop small satellite platforms with a major focus on assembly, integration, operation, and testing of satellites. 

Highlights

The company became the first private Indian company to put a satellite in space in December 2018.

Competition is a very subjective term and varies on even very minute details. Your product could be 10x better than your competition but why harm yourself just for boasting or in many cases due to lack of market knowledge.  

Let’s cut to the chase and understand why certain companies underplay the power they hold with the help of an excerpt from Peter Thiel’s book “Zero to One”  

Peter Theil writes, “What valuable company is nobody building? This question is harder than it looks, because your company could create a lot of value without becoming very valuable itself. Creating value isn’t enough—you also need to capture some of the value you create.”

“This means that even very big businesses can be bad businesses. For example, U.S. airline companies serve millions of passengers and create hundreds of billions of dollars of value each year. But in 2012, when the average airfare each way was $178, the airlines made only 37 cents per passenger trip. Compare them to Google , which creates less value but captures far more. Google brought in $50 billion in 2012 (versus $160 billion for the airlines), but it kept 21% of those revenues as profits—more than 100 times the airline industry’s profit margin that year. Google makes so much money that it is now worth three times more than every U.S. airline combined.

The airlines compete with each other, but Google stands alone. Economists use two simplified models to explain the difference: perfect competition and monopoly.”

“Perfect competition is considered both the ideal and the default state in Economics 101. So-called perfectly competitive markets achieve equilibrium when producer supply meets consumer demand. Every firm in a competitive market is undifferentiated and sells the same homogeneous products. Since no firm has any market power, they must all sell at whatever price the market determines. If there is money to be made, new firms will enter the market, increase supply, drive prices down and thereby eliminate the profits that attracted them in the first place. Is it a tech startup ( e.g. Whatsapp or Twitter) or a non-technical startup (e.g. co-working spaces)?

• Learn to code by yourself  
• Look for a technical co-founder. 

Whether it is a technical startup or a non-technical startup, the options are still the same with some basic difference in requirements, priority and what option is best for your startup.

Now let’s evaluate each one of them and see what fits best to your requirements. 

Outsourcing to an IT company: 

• It will help you save money on hiring staff i.e. you can pay as you go
• It saves you time. 
• You handle it over to an expert.

The key here is to ensure you are outsourcing to someone having an awesome portfolio of developing products for startups. Slack, Skype, Github and MYSQL are a few examples of a successful business that outsourced to develop their solution in their earliest days.

Hiring a freelancer:

Again, you can go with the portfolio and save money on hiring full-time staff and time as well. Regular face-to-face interaction with the freelancer can get you the best results. Freelancer.com, Upwork and Simply Hired are some of the top websites where you can find the right talent to help develop your product.

Hiring a developer: 

This will cost you money probably less then outsourcing it to an agency. The advantage here, is better communication and your supervision over the project.

Learning how to code by yourself:

Gone are the days when learning how to code was a herculean task. Today, you can learn to code in a few days. Do you ask, why? Programming languages like Python and Ruby are way easier to code when compared to their predecessors. Plus, online learning platforms like Codeacademy, freeCodeCamp and code.org offers affordable courses that are easy to grasp.  

Look for a technical co-founder:

It is difficult to find a technical co-founder for a startup. It is not easy to give up a hefty pay package for something that just exists as an idea. Also, would you go for a technical co-founder who lacks other entrepreneurial skill sets? Why bet a huge percentage of equity share on a technical co-founder who is not passionate for your startup in the long run? After all, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Instead, you can outsource the project and hire a CTO when you can afford one. 

If it is a technical startup and you know a technical guy who shares the same passion as you do for the product you want to develop then get him/her in. If he/she syncs with the long term vision of your to-be-company and brings in the entrepreneurial spirit, you are business.

Don’t want to believe me? Micheal Dell founder and CEO of Dell, Brian Chesky. Alex Turnbull founder of Groove HQ and Jamie Wong founder of Vayable were all non-tech founders that made it big without a technical co-founder. Of course, the examples are rare and finding a good outsourcing agency that could do the justice to your product is rare but yes you can still do it without one. It shows, there are people who have been there without a technical co-founder and done that.

Xiaomi is not just a smartphone company or an electronic giant but is also a hub of innovation. With its innovative products released every other month, it has given the signal to the world that it will enter every sector that has any space for innovation. Recently Xiaomi-backed Yunmai launched a new wearable called the Yunmai smart training watch for INR 7200. If we take the clock back a few days to February 15, 2019, Xiaomi Mi Men’s Sports Shoes 2 were launched in India that featured Fishbone Structure and shock absorbance for INR 2500 and a Mi Luggage suitcase for INR 2,999 in September 2018. Now, Xiaomi is back with another innovative product. This time it has launched a crowdfunding campaign for smart fingerprint lock (AreoX Smart Fingerprint U-lock) that obviously operates on the fingerprint sensor but comes with a physical unlock key as well if the battery runs out.

Now, the important thing to notice here is that most of these products were launched through the crowdfunding campaigns, has innovation speak its best, are in budget and also curated keeping Indian customer requirements in mind. The crowdfunding project on Xiaomi’s crowdfunding platform YouPin has already crossed 1,011,000 Chinese Yuan (>Rs 1 Crore), which is almost 2.5 times of its set target. You can crowdfund and get the U-Lock with the shorter beam priced at 199 RMB(INR 2050) and the other one with the longer beam priced at 219 RMB (INR 2256) which is likely to start shipping from May 23, 2019.

Key features Xiaomi’s AreoX Smart Fingerprint U-lock Sports

As per the crowdfunding page, the U-lock can be used to lock bikes and even cars. The U-lock sports a stainless steel lock beam for which the company claims, can’t be easily cut with the help of a hacksaw and comes with “an anti-theft lock body”. The body of the lock is IP65 certified that makes it resistant to water and dust. The biometric identification can unlock within about 0.55 seconds and as to serve the purpose of any lock, to keep your belongings secure, the company claims that the lock detects dummy fingerprints within seconds. Its battery can last up to 12 months and you get a USB Type-C port in case, it gets discharged.
