In 2015, Black Hops launched their first brewery making use of a crowdfunding campaign to help fund the opening. They were waiting and working towards equity crowdfunding to become legal in Australia, and here they are, scaling up its operations with a second production facility and taproom in Biggera Waters with the help of equity crowdfunding. The project is due for completion in early 2019, with plans for interstate expansion in mind.

Black Hops Inception – 2015

©Black Hops/Birchal

The genesis and development of this thought about opening up a brewery manifested when 3 mates Dan, Eddie and Govs began discussing a concept over a beer at the pub. They decided that they will make craft beer and share everything they learn along the way. Eventually, they made their first beer, the Eggnog Stout.

They brewed the world’s first official Call of Duty beer in 2015 and successfully raised $17,000 via Pozible to become the first Aussie brewery to launch via crowdfunding.

Accolades

Black Hops was recently awarded 5 Gold Medals at the 2018 Australian International Beer Awards.

They were honoured with two trophies including the Champion Small Australian Brewery, making it one of Australia’s highest rated and fastest growing breweries.

The Brewery will feature investment rewards from $50 and up to $10,000 for retail investors. Investors will be offered priority access to limited release beers too. Black Hops has set a target to raise $400,000 from investors through this equity crowdfunding campaign with <g class="gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="9" data-gr-id="9">Birchal</g>.

This is what Dan Norris, co-founder of Black Hops had to say on “equity crowdfunding”

©Dan Norris

“We’ve been following the process for legalising equity crowdfunding for a few years. Now that it’s finally here, we are looking forward to being one of the first breweries to run a campaign and the first to use equity crowdfunding to help fund the opening of a brewery.”

“One of the best things about crowdfunding is how great it is at building up a group of advocates and followers. We’ve done this since day one with our Black Hops Ambassadors.”

He further added, “Backers are likely to be fans and advocates of your business and thrilled to be part of the action. And what better advocates for your company than the people who are prepared to buy a stake in it. We believe that equity crowdfunding is a great way for everyday drinkers of our beer to become investors and share in our future growth.”

Overview

Previously, under the crowd-sourced funding (CSF) regime companies were required to convert to unlisted public companies before they could raise funds under the regime. Now, it has been expanded to include proprietary companies as well, thereby such companies can raise up to $5 million every 12 months from retail investors on a licensed CSF platform.

The Chosen, Issues Equity, Making It The Largest-Ever Crowdfunded Campaign In The Category

VidAngel, an American streaming video and production company released a concept pilot of The Chosen, a story of Jesus, on social media that ended up being viewed 15 million times. Yes. That actually happened. No kidding.

©Dallas Jenkins, creator of “The Chosen” Photo by Savannah Faith Photo

This is what Dallas Jenkins, director and co-writer of the series, who recently directed The Resurrection of Gavin Stone for Blumhouse Productions and Walden Media, has to say on the miracle:-

“We started this campaign with no built-in audience and we based it on a short film I made on my friend’s Illinois farm for my church’s Christmas Eve service after my previous film had disappointed at the box office,” Jenkins said. “What’s happened has blown us away, but it’s an indication that there’s tremendous demand for something like this. I love binge-watching original series, so why not one about Jesus and his followers?”

The project <g class="gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="4" data-gr-id="4">utilised</g> “equity crowdfunding” to raise money for the scripted show, offering one share for each dollar invested. The production company artfully issued equity to investors making the use of a provision made in 2016 in President Obama’s so-called JOBS Act. The “equity crowdfunding“ is highly regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC), but has stated that production companies and other entities can offer a share of the profits to online strangers who financially invest in their projects.

©VidAngel

This project called “The Chosen” is live and has raised more than $9 million. They are seeking $13 million to produce a full series.

Here are the historical statistics of crowdfunding in any TV show:

Super Troopers 2, the record-holder for film and TV category in Indiegogo raised $4.6 million. Mystery Science Theater 3000, which was later picked up by Netflix had raised $5.8 million on Kickstarter. None of these projects at Kickstarter or Indiegogo offered equity to investors.

What shall we learn from it?

©Catapooolt

Equity crowdfunding and rewards basics.

It should be noted that these shares can’t be resold at this time, but managers of the production company have guaranteed that they shall not accept any profits — should there be any — until all investors make at least 120 percent on their investment made. Investors could also potentially make more money, as they are the partial owners in perpetuity. VidAngel and crowdfunding investors are hoping to make a profit via streaming and broadcast licenses, DVD and VOD.

Instead of the usual reward schemes, like tickets to screenings, DVDs or one on one interaction opportunity with actors, they chose to go with equity crowdfunding and the results are in front of you.

You can watch the pilot of “The Chosen” and listen to the team behind the project in the following videos below.

Do let us know your views on the matter discussed. If you also have any idea that has been lingering in your mind for long and has not manifest just because of lack of funds, you can launch your campaign with Catapooolt – India’s largest crowdfunding platform.

Did you know that the 18th-century poet Alexander Pope wanted to fund his work of translating Greek poetry into English and so he asked people for help in return of being acknowledged in his book? So did Mozart. The question is why it didn’t the concept get that popular even after being in existence for so long? Apparently, b<g class="gr_ gr_92 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="92" data-gr-id="92">anks</g> were never pleased with this idea, then there are so many limitations that hinder the growth of the crowdfunding market.

Today is a new day though. The UK has recorded the history again. The latest EY report says that crowdfunding(20%) has surpassed bank financing(19%) and has taken its place as the second most preferred option in the UK, only after venture capital which still contributes 75% of growth capital. EY published their second annual “Fast Growth Tracker” report that surveys founders and entrepreneurs in the UK.

This is what Bruce Davis, Director of the UK Crowdfunding Association (UKCFA), remarked on the report.

“This report confirms how significant crowdfunding has become for entrepreneurs, now passing the banks as their preferred funding source after venture capital.”

Bruce Davis, Director of the UK Crowdfunding Association (UKCFA)

©Peer2Peer Finance News

He further added, “With more than half of entrepreneurs planning to raise between £1 million – £5 million next year, the changes earlier this year to the Prospectus Directive, raising the ceiling on crowdfunding to 8 million Euros, puts crowdfund platforms in the sweet-spot for entrepreneurs’ funding needs. Add to this the increasingly frequent practice of VC funding and crowdfunding working side by side on a raise, and few would argue that crowdfunding is now a truly mainstream source of funding for entrepreneurs, whether at very early stage or right through to later when money is needed to scale up.”

“This implies that there is more work to be done by the public and private sector to support UK entrepreneurs. Maintaining the UK ‘s status as an attractive market to build a company will be of vital importance if the economy is to thrive in the future.”

Well, let’s hope this more democratic world of fundraising helps us together build a better world.
